I ended my last post with these words, “It is in our power to drastically improve the world around us if we just choose to work with what we have.”
And then, began to explain what I meant, but realized, I would need a new post for that.
After all, in the creation account in Abraham (Pearl of Great Price) the Lord said,
“We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;”
(Abr. 3:24).
So, look around you. What materials do you have to make the world around you to be what you want it to be?
For example, once I was talking to a student at BYU-I who was an artist. She was lamenting over how expensive art supplies are. I asked her what was her favorite medium. She said watercolor. And yes, for a student a $30-$50 set is probably overwhelming! Especially with the higher cost of living that the last few years of inflation has brought. I remember being a poor struggling young mother and not having money to throw a birthday party for my daughter.
I talked to her about crayola watercolors – a few dollars at the store. Sure, it’s not the professional tools that you want! But you can start to work, learn, master techniques. When the time comes that you have the money, you will also have the talent.
After I told that story to a class of mine, a student made this amazing watercolor tree image. She included Douglas Malloch’s Good Timber poem. She used crayola watercolors! 😁❤️
If you want to make movies – you have a phone. Make movies. Learn how to edit. Learn about crafting stories. About setting up shots. And then use the platforms that are available to you.
Create because you can! Don’t wait for money or opportunities to suddenly fall into your lap. Use the materials and space that is around you.
“And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose;”
It is a gift from God to create – so ENJOY the opportunities that are around you.
And speaking of that, a couple of weeks ago, I published Hand Grenades. I realized that I had been part of 14 books, which was very satisfying. I realized though that I used to put pins on Pinterest for my small business. For a while now, I’ve only used it as a site for recipes (a very handy site). But I still want it to have those links to my books. So for the next 14 weeks, I’m going to catalog the books that I’ve worked on. Just a goal of mine. 😁
What have you created? What would you like to create?
