If you had a dream that an attractive stranger was in mortal danger and needed your help, would you skip your math test to save him?
Sixteen-year-old Ivy Rogers does and it pivots her into a treasure hunt that could end her life, or make all of her dreams come true.
Author Fiona Ostler created a modern day YA story that combines romance, history, with a hint of supernatural gifts.
Our second book for Waldron Publishing that I edited and published was Fiona’s Guardian Goldrush. This book! It was an adventure start to finish. I loved the flashbacks to the Gold-rush time period. I fell in love with the characters – even the bad guys! They followed a magic 8-ball to guide them to their goals. So clever and funny!
Fiona had a friend, artist Jessica Millis that created the beautiful cover. I loved the gold touches that looked like they were threaded through her hair.
This was another one that I was planning on publishing just as an eBook. But we did a small run of hard copies. Unfortunately, those books broke out of their bindings. I was gutted! How could I try to sell a product that was so flawed? And I was so poor. My small business dreams were going up in smoke! I knew that the tools we had would work, but they were clunky and new. I was ready to be done.
But we persevered, and kept trying. Plus, I had two amazing books and a couple of blogs and a website that were doing really well. Also, a beautiful image created by Jana Friel was taking off on Pinterest and Waldron Publishing was getting some traction. Of course these were some of the early days (2011 – 2015) of blogging and eBooks.
I tried my hand at a book trailer for this one and while I loved the creativity, it wasn’t fantastic. We were working on all sorts of creative endeavors. Fiona, Roy and I worked on a podcast together called Spectacular Belly Flops. We did 11 episodes and wanted it to be about spectacular tries and epic failures. But again, our aims for the show were different and it just didn’t work for long-term. But oh! We learned a lot.
Meanwhile, Fiona continued to write, finishing a book called, Seth Carter’s Alien Abduction/Adoption. It was a SCI-Fi YA novel. Here’s the pitch – Most kids don’t choose alien abduction as a form of teenage rebellion, but Seth Carter has always wanted to fly a UFO. He soon discovers that he’ll get more than he dreamed of. We call it abduction, but they call it adoption.
I add that book (Seth Carter) here because I got to be a part of idea sessions, proofreading, and editing. While I don’t count it as one of my 14 books, I LOVE it.
Oh she is an idea queen and a gifted writer! I always seem to fall in love with her characters and their interactions. We were in a writing group and that experience propelled me in so many ways. I owe a debt of gratitude to Fiona. I hope that she continues to write – because I am and will always be a total fan!!
